Default Torture- Disagree with me and I'll waterboard you!

So, stances on torture, people?
When is torture okay, if it is at all? Is torture actually a valid way to get information from an enemy? Is it just morally wrong and shouldn't be applied anywhere? And of course, bring up anything else you want to.

I don't think Torture should be used but how else ar you going to get information? I don't think you are going to get information by giving the person a cup of coffee and some biccies, do you?

First of all, define "torture"

Some say nipple clamps are torture, but I like them.

I think that when people want information, they need to be free to get it in any way, but torture is a little over-the-top. Physical torture, at least. There are ways other than inflicting pain to make someone see things your way. Pschology, for instance. Or enough alcohol that they will answer any question you throw at them (although not always correctly).

"No physical or mental torture, nor any other form of coercion, may be inflicted on prisoners of war to secure from them information of any kind whatever. Prisoners of war who refuse to answer may not be threatened, insulted or exposed to unpleasant or disadvantageous treatment of any kind."

thats from the Geneva Conventions, but according to Bush, that isn't specific enough, so we re-wrote the Geneva Convention

Quote:
...the president is pushing legislation to allow classified evidence to be withheld from defendants during their trials. He wants coerced testimony to be allowed as evidence, and he wants U.S. interrogators to be protected from prosecution for using methods that might violate the Geneva Conventions.
Bush Defends Push to Clarify Geneva Convention

another funny thing, John McCain, a former POW, used to lead the pack against this, but for some reason changed his mind and is backing his party now

i think that in the military, torture is a valid way to get information, but nowhere else. they say torture is inhumane, but shooting and killing people is? If you are catured, you are supposed to be treated humanely and fairly. Why would you have to show mercy to someone who was trying to kill you only minutes before? Why should people try to kill somebody one minute, but as soon as they throw their hands up you're supposed to treat them fairly, and have them sent to a prison to simply wait out the rest of the war, being fed and sheltered, while others are still out enduring more unfairness and misery than them? During war, you need to get information any way possible, because the lives of thousands could be at stake.

I think that torture in most other places is wrong, such as in civilian prisons. That is simply because it is not necessary

ok, i pose you this question then...hypothetically of course, if a government were to create a fake war and then invoke their new powers of getting information by any means necessary, including spying on American citizens, would you agree with that too?
