Yanks rightly see space travel as one of their major achievements. They say they got their "first", however, no one else was trying. So, they also sort of came last as well.

Strangely enough, it was a one man race to visit a dead planet where nothing grows and nothing lives. If there was something to be gained from visiting the moon such as new fuels, new technologies and bright blue aliens with 3 fingered hands maybe the Russians, Chinese and British would joined the race. However the moon is dead therefore spending trillions on visiting it simply for the "nice view" is daft when that money could have been spent on something marginally more useful, such as a free health care system.

Al Murray is right when he states the British only endevaour to conquer new lands when there is something to be gained in the way of hot and spicy food or Olympic quality athletes (Ireland being the exception, like, no offence Jim).

I don't understand this "first" concept. What difference does it make who is first? Isn't it just important that humans keeps advancing the sciences?
