Intel chips are way faster. The AMD Quad Core chip that was released MONTHS after the lowest end Intel (Q6600) processor was still noticeably slower than the Intel chip, and it was only $10 cheaper.
Guys, clock speeds really don't tell you much about a chip these days. Sure, some AMD chips have fast clock speeds, but there is a lot more to it than that. Intel chips, while they may be slower (in some cases), complete more actions per clock cycle. (4 for Intel, 3 for AMD). So in reality, an Intel chip running at 2Ghz is actually outperforming an AMD chip running at 2.5Ghz.
On top of this, there are a whole slew of other factors to consider. Anybody notice that Intel chips have more than double the L2 cache of any AMD processor? The dual core AMD processors have as much cache total as a single core 32-bit Intel processor (NOT even the Core 2 Processor! There are Pentium 4's that have more cache!)
In addition, there are other factors such as power consumption and size, which Intel is also leading in. If you look at the Apple Air Ultraportable Laptop, that uses a custom-built Intel mini-core that runs blazingly fast for an Ultraportable Laptop (Although not for a regular laptop). With the release of their new Penryn-based processors, they can now attach up to 3mb of L2 cache to each core, and it provides significant reduction in power consumption.
Really, price is all that AMD has going for it, and that is only because their product isn't in demand anymore. If someone can find me a high-end computer (gaming or otherwise), that uses an AMD, I'd love to see it. Not that AMD chips are bad or anything. They produce a very cost-efficient alternative, which is good for non-intensive processing activities, but I just had to vent because I assumed that someone else would have mentioned this. |
Finally, and Intel fan! I've been here all alone! Yes, I couldn't agree with you more.
