All you need to know, is that Intel > AMD right now.

It used to be the case that AMD > Intel. In fact, this was the case for years. Intel apparently used some voodoo and fairy dust, and has passed AMD in quality of their cpu's.

AMD may catch up later, who knows. But now, Intel is the way to go.

Does anyone know how AMD is for laptops? I know that desktop technologies are pretty different from Laptop technologies, and I think that while Intel chips have lower power consumption, they must be AROUND the same level in that area, at least with regards to price-performance.

Intel wins there too. Their 45nm architecture on their higher end cpus are far more efficient (and faster) and prevent energy leakage (as compared to the 65nm architecture).

my laptop runs faster than my desktop does in terms of processing...in hard drive access time it fails miserably (7200rpm > 4200rpm)

3ghz pentium 4 desktop, 2ghz AMD Turion64 (single core) laptop

my laptop was also the only single core in bestbuy that came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed...I guess it shows the cpu is a beast

I always prefer intel processors, they are always better I think. I never used AMD. Perhaps they may be better but I really don't have any knowledge about AMD processors.

Probably because AMD owns ATI. I still think that Nvidia beats ATI out though. SLI > Crossfire ftw!
