OK, who here believes that there is life outside of Earth? Why? Why not?

As for me, I strongly believe that science itself provides a good reason to believe in such things. Firstly, picture the Earth. We do not know how large the universe is, but, considering it contains everything there is, it's probably infinite. One cold say that it stops somewhere, but then it's not a universe, its an area bordered by more area. Now, think of how big that is. It's almost impossible to think that all of the other planets out there are uninhabitable. If you research the theory of how Earth began and life started, think of how that probably happened to dozens of other planets out there. Perhaps life can exist under conditions that our lives could not live under. Even if it is just bacteria nourishing itself from chemosynthesis and splitting apart every once in a while, it is still life. How do we define life, exactly? Would finding viruses on a distant planet, which are not considered living things because they do not perform all the life processes, have the same impact than finding bacteria, which do live? I would say so. And it's a fair assumption to say that these conditions change. Life evolves and mutates and adapts, and then you have a bunch of bug eyed "Greys" walking around neutralizing things with lasers.

Another point to consider is the purpose of this thread. It is not about sightings of aliens and aliens coming to Earth. It is about theie existance. They may be as oblivious to us as we are to them, but that makes them no less real. There is no proof supporting their existance, but it seems probable that they do. However, this thread is not limited to what there is no evidence of. Feel free to mention sightings of aliens, but keep in mind that they neither prove nor disprove the existance of extraterrestrial life.

I think aliens are real, we don't know how far the universe extends, so we haven't touched upon everything in it. I believe there are things to find waiting in the rest of the universe...

Exactly. It's possible that they do not, but as long as we haven't explored it all we do not know. What was that scientist, whose belief was that if you put a cat in a box with a trigger to release poison, you must assume thatit as both alive and dead because you cannot observe it without changing the results? Schrodenger? Or am I thinking of someone else? Anyway, similar principles. You can't say they do not exist, or that they do, definitely, but I do believe that it is probable.
