Question Ann Coulter to back Clinton?

Ann Coulter, a leading conservative voice in the media, recently made some of the most controversial comments of her career. Coulter has made no secret of her dislike of Senator John McCain as a presidential candidate. As the Senator has moved into a position that appears headed for the Republican nomination, the remarks have gotten far harsher. She went so far in a recent interview as to vow that if John McCain was the nominee, she would be campaigning for Hillary Clinton.

While with most people these types of comments would be taken with a grain of salt, Coulter isn’t known for making comments without the intent to back them up. This has brought contempt from many other conservatives, saying that while they don’t approve of McCain that offering to campaign for a Democrat is a bit too far. This is part of an ever growing problem within the Republican Party. It seems as thought the party is growing more and more fractured as the primary season rolls forward.

On one end of the spectrum are the far right leaning conservatives of the Republican party, who would prefer to cut off a finger as opposed to reach across party lines and find some sort of common ground with the opposition. This group would be the anti-McCain faction. While this group has a very loyal backing, the fact remains that the support hasn’t been enough at this point to overcome the groundswell of support McCain has found.

In turn, there is the more middle ground group that is supporting McCain. This group of people sees the Senator as someone who can actually get things done by finding the common ground and not being so staunchly conservative that party lines are all that matter. These are the people that believe that the Republican party has fallen too far to the right, and needs to be brought back closer to center.

The decision in the Republican Party seems to center around whether the status quo is good enough, or if changes need to be made. I know for me the best choice would be McCain, not because I truly support him, but because I would love to see Ann Coulter and Hillary Clinton standing side by side! That would be the moment when the world realizes that hell has officially frozen over.
