Coldwit, what does religion have to do with being civilized. If religious people are only civilized sometimes, then what does religion have to do with it? People as a whole are civilized sometimes and sometimes not. Religion gives people another reason to be civilized or to wage war.

Ted Bundy was a Christian. The reason he did all those things is because, at a young age, he and his friends discovered pornography, and he got addicted. Porn affects everyone differently, but Ted was one of the few with an extremely addictive nature, and it eventually led to more "hard core" things, and eventually to rape/murder. Just shows the destructive nature of pornography. I'm not saying that everyone who views porn will be a serial rapist/murderer; however, it can happen even to the most religious people in a perfect household. Be careful, guys.

Or maybe because his religion made him feel like such a dirty naughty boy for viewing that porn, he ended up having very skewed views and wasn't able to cope and so he created this alternate being inside himself that was fueled by these horrible acts.


Or it could be that his brain simply worked in a different way then ours.

The point is...Ted Bundy, or any serial killer, is a horrible example of why you need religion. So far, up to this point in my life, I've lived mostly religion-free and have been able to avoid mass murder.


edit: also...what friends? Bundy was a social outcast, he didn't hang out with kids from school...he couldn't understand how kids from school thought, because his brain was wired differently.

I would like to see some backing behind that we need religion to be civilized. Also specify which religion. some involve ritual sacrifices of innocent people. Is that civilized?

Your point seemed to be that the main reason people tend to avoid killing and raping is that we fear some sort of negative afterlife and strive to reach a positive one. This is what I don't get. Most of us have a system of morals in our brains without being told that if if you break a rule, you could suffer in the afterlife. For some, the system of morals means little or is distorted. I really don't think that a lack of a belief system like that would make someone think it is okay to kill or rape, and I don't think the presence of one does a whole hell of a lot to make someone who is considering it decide not to.

Give me some better evidence. This thread needs that kind of discussion, I think. What else are we going to talk about in this thread?
