QUOTE FROM WIKIPEDIA:
Quote:
The execution of former President of Iraq Saddam Hussein was the capital punishment imposed after his trial for the killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail in 1982. Hussein was executed at approximately 0555 local time (0255 GMT) on December 30, 2006 by hanging, although the time has not been precisely reported to the media yet.

It has been reported that Saddam Hussein's body will probably be buried at a secret location in an unmarked grave no later than 24 hours after the execution.

According to CNN, two locations were selected for the execution, one inside the green zone and another outside. Al Arabiya is reporting that Hussein's execution did not take place in the Green Zone.

Saddam Hussein's execution took place as some Iraqis began celebrating Eid ul-Adha.

Media coverage
The primary source of this news was the Iraqi state-run TV station Al Arabiya. A scrolling headline read: "Saddam's execution marks the end of a dark period of Iraq's history." The BBC noted that a doctor, lawyer, and various officials were present, and a video recording of the execution was made.[2] This tape is to be released by the Iraqi government and broadcast through Al Arabiya to curb any rumors that the execution did not take place. Al Arabiya claims Hussein's lawyer has confirmed Saddam's death.

State-run Iraqi news states that photos and video from the execution will be shown around midday. (FOX News TV Alert)

The state-run Iraqi television news station "Al Iraqiya" has also confirmed Saddam's execution. An announcer said "criminal Saddam was hanged to death and the execution started with criminal Saddam then Barzan then Awad al-Bandar."

According to the BBC, Al Iraqiya stated that Saddam did not put up any resistance during the execution, and that footage of it will be broadcast at midday local time.[citation needed] CNN and FOX News have reported that once they have received images from the execution, the content will be reviewed and possibly shown on the respective news stations. Marc Ginsberg has stated that he believes FOX News will soon receive images from the execution to Greta Van Susteren.

CNN has noted that many Iraqis have been glued to their TVs and radios throughout the whole process and many more have just woken up to the news. BBC analysts noted that public reactions within Iraq are likely to remain unclear until after Eid morning prayers.

FOX News has reported that U.S. President George W. Bush has released a statement on the execution of Hussein's death and its place in the state of peace in Iraq. He stated that bringing Saddam to justice will not end the violence in Iraq.

Reaction
Saddam's daughter Raghad Hussein, exiled in Jordan, has asked that his body be buried in Yemen temporarily until Iraq is liberated and it can be reburied in Iraq, a source close to the family said by telephone.

Mariam al-Rayes, a legal expert and a former member of the Shi'ite bloc in parliament, told Al Iraqiya television that the execution "was filmed and God willing it will be shown. There was one camera present, and a doctor was also present there."

Reports from various news sources have claimed that Iraqis are celebrationg Hussein's execution. CNN reported that according to an official there was dancing and Shi'ite chants around Saddam's body after the execution took place. Meanwhile, a Fox News reporter located in Baghdad has stated that there has been what is thought to be celebratory gunfire in Baghdad. According to CNN and the BBC, there have been celebrations in the United States in at least one location in Dearborn, Michigan at the corner of Warren and Greenfield, a heavily Muslim and Iraqi-American community.

The United States is braced for backlash violence due to Saddam's execution.

Legality
Libya's leader Muammar al-Gaddafi described Saddam's Trial as illegal (باطلة). As a prisoner of war, international conventions prohibit his trial. Qaddafi added that America and Britain must be put on trial in this matter. CNN reported that Saddam Hussein's lawyer has stated that Saddam's trial was unfair. One of Saddam's lawyers talked to Fox News correspondent Greta Van Susteren about Saddam's trial and execution. Video of the conversation is located on the FOX News Iraq Center.

Human Rights Watch issued a statement claiming the "execution follows a flawed trial and marks a significant step away from the rule of law in Iraq".
Opinions? I'm not gonna voice my opinion cuz it would turn this thing into a GIANT debate.

Well, I think it is good that he can't do any more damage now, but the bad thing is that he buddies were threatening that they would do very bad thinks if he was executed.

BAD MOVE! They shouldn't have executed him, but put him on some deserted island that is top secret with high security! GEEZ! Now the chaos will be unleashed! In addition... Now that he's gone... the Taliban and insurgents will start to bomb more large cities worldwide [repeats of 9-11]... That could prove troublesome, and the terrorist force is growing stronger and more clever every day.

TIKRIT, Iraq -- About 100 mourners gathered at the flag-draped grave of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein who was buried Sunday in Awja, near Tikrit.

About 100 people, including the governor of Salaheddin, clerics, tribal leaders and relatives attended the event, which took place at 4 a.m. (0100 GMT).

Saddam Hussein's relatives, including sons Uday and Qusay, are buried in the same cemetery. His sons were killed in a firefight with U.S. forces in 2003. (Watch mourners kneeling, weeping at grave Video)

Iraq's state-run television network, Al-Iraqiya, reported that the Iraqi government formally handed over Hussein's body to Sheikh Ali al-Nida, leader of the Bou Nasser tribe, and the governor of Salaheddin. It was transported by the U.S. military.

The body was then taken to Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, north of the capital, where members of the Bou Nasser tribe and clerics prayed over it, said a reporter for CNN who saw the body in Tikrit.

"I condemn the way he was executed and I consider it a crime," Salam Hassan al-Nasseri, one of Saddam's clansmen who attended the interment, told The Associated Press.

Hussein remained defiant to the end, arguing with guards and mocking Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr moments before he was hanged, a witness said Saturday.

The Iraqi government executed Hussein before dawn as punishment for his role in a massacre of his own people more than two decades before he was toppled by a U.S.-led invasion.

A video of the execution broadcast on Al-Iraqiya showed Hussein, dressed in a black overcoat, being led into a room by three masked guards. (Watch amateur video of Hussein minutes before his execution -- graphic content, viewer discretion advised Video)

A witness, Iraqi Judge Munir Haddad, said that one of the executioners told Hussein that the former dictator had destroyed Iraq, which sparked an argument that was joined by several government officials in the room.

As a noose was tightened around Hussein's neck, one of the executioners yelled "long live Muqtada al-Sadr," Haddad said, referring to the powerful anti-American Shiite religious leader.

Hussein, a Sunni, uttered one last phrase before he died, saying "Muqtada al-Sadr" in a mocking tone, according to Haddad's account.

The judge said Hussein appeared "totally oblivious to what was going on around him. I was very surprised. He was not afraid of death."

But Haddad's description of Hussein's demeanor before his execution contrasts markedly with that of another witness, Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie. "He was a broken man," al-Rubaie said. "He was afraid. You could see fear in his face." (Watch al-Rubaie describe Hussein's final moments Video)

Hussein's death came in "a blink of the eye" after his executioner activated the gallows just after 6 a.m. (10 p.m. Friday ET), said al-Rubaie.

"This dark page has been turned over," al-Rubaie said. "Saddam is gone. Today Iraq is an Iraq for all the Iraqis, and all the Iraqis are looking forward. ... The [Hussein] era has gone forever."

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who didn't attend the execution, pleaded for national unity to ward off deadly sectarian violence that is straining Iraq's fledgling government.

"In the name of the people I call on all men of the past regime and manipulated by it to reconsider their stances," al-Maliki said in a written statement released after the execution.

"The door is still open for every person who does not have blood of innocents on his hands to join in rebuilding of Iraq, which will be for all Iraqis without exceptions or discrimination." (Watch what Hussein's death could mean in Iraq Video)

Executioner 'joined dancing'

Word of Hussein's execution was followed by Iraqi street celebrations. (Full story)

Al-Rubaie said that while the execution was carried out with due respect to Hussein -- and following "all international and Islamic standards" -- some witnesses and the executioner could not resist celebrating by dancing around the body after the hanging.

"It's a very ordinary action of a number of people -- some of them officials, some of them ordinary people, even the executioner as well, because they have lost their loved ones -- their fathers, brothers, sisters -- this is a natural reaction," he said.

The execution took place outside the heavily fortified U.S. Green Zone, al-Rubaie said, and no Americans were present.

"It was an Iraqi operation from A to Z," he said. "The Americans were not present during the hour of the execution. They weren't even in the building."

He added that "there were no Shiite or Sunni clerics present, only the witnesses and those who carried out the actual execution were present."

On Al-Arabiya television, al-Rubaie said the execution took place at the 5th Division intelligence office in Qadhimiya.

In the United States, Iraqi-Americans celebrated in the street in Dearborn, Michigan, home to the nation's largest concentration of Iraqis. (Watch Iraqi-Americans dancing, kissing and singing in the streets
