So with this whole earthquake thing going on, I'm sure you people have noticed - or even contributed to - this whole "Shame on you America" thing that seems to be going around. So what are your thoughts on something like this, saw it on someone's facebook status: Shame on you America: the only country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed without eating, elderly going without needed meds, and mentally ill without treatment - yet we have a benefit for the people of Haiti on 12 TV stations. 99% of people won't have the guts to copy and repost this.. Guess ......what I have the guts!!!! This advertisement is only visible to guests. Register for free to remove it! ![]() "Don't vote, it only encourages them." |

Uh... wow. I guess people like that don't realize that a major disaster just occurred that killed over six figures of people, with the death toll rising - not counting all the displaced and heavily injured people as well. So yeah, let's just not help them! We're people - we shouldn't segregate our help only to other Americans or people that are our military allies. We need to help everyone, because that's what people are supposed to do, and that's what our country does. ![]() We wish to pursue the truth no matter where it leads. But to find the truth, we need imagination and skepticism both. We will not be afraid to speculate, but we will be careful to distinguish speculation from fact. The cosmos is full beyond measure of elegant truths; of exquisite interrelationships; of the awesome machinery of nature. |

It's a perfect example of borders meaning more to people than people do.

I believe we should help people if we can no matter where they happen to live, but on the flipside I do understand the sentiment of those saying "shame on America". It seems like the only time people really want to help each other is when a big disaster or something like that happens in the country or the world. Any other time, we'll pass that homeless guy on the street looking at him with disdain without a second thought about it. Remember when 9/11 happened how united the country was and how much we wanted to help each other? Now we're just as divisive as we ever were. It is just a shame really.

I agree with that but I think the sentiment of what I posted wasn't really what you were saying. It was more, "Why help them? We got problems on our own soil," which is shit.

| I think you can look at it in different ways. The sentiment I got was more along the lines of what was in my previous post. I don't think they were saying "Let's not help Haiti" but merely wondering why it is that we only seem to want to help people when there's a huge disaster like an earthquake or tsunami. People suffer every single day, but we don't throw benefits like the one for Haiti very often, do we?

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the sentiment then, because I STILL SEE IT MY WAY OKAY?
