SHERMAN OAKS, February 2, 2007 - State occupational safety authorities will be investigating why a construction site crane toppled over onto northbound lanes of the 405 freeway Friday afternooon, triggering a collision and bringing traffic to a halt.
The accident prompted the drivers of a big-rig and an SUV to swerve to avoid the crane boom and collide. And northbound traffic ground to a halt as firefighters worked for more than an hour to free the crane operator from the machine.
A Fire Department spokesman said the 44-year-old man suffered rib fractures and severe injuries to his left hand but was conscious and alert. A fire helicopter landed on the freeway to fly him to a hospital.
Thousands of motorists were stuck for at least three hours.
