I think it's amazing how the human brain works. Once were conditioned, or once we have experience with something, it's common knowledge and we don't give two seconds thought about it. If we've never seen this, or been there, dolphins would jump out more than anything, because after all, we know what a dolphin looks like. That's cool...

As for being a test for purity, I kind of disagree. Most people over the age of 12 or so will probably see the two people in the nude. Children who are not familiar with such topics would see the dolphins. Now, not seeing the dolphins until you look for them is a result of not knowing you were supposed to look for them.
