It's just a way to celebrate the life of Douglas Adams and the effect he had on so many people. If you don't like it, don't celebrate. Being a jackass is totally unnecessary.

I would imagine so, especially as Douglas Adams is british. I was actually referring to the second part of the question.

Towels were an important part of Douglas Adam's book about the universe. It's really hilarious if you want to read it. We're not just celebrating towels.
