I do hope those circles on the road that lead to the sewers are called manholes. Otherwise, I've been lied to for many years of my life.

Aj got a point, but not an answer. Here's the hint. Sure, it can be the same shape as the hole, but imagine if it were a square. And thus, the reason why it's a circle.
