Well as stated, the point is:

Quote:
The goal of the Dogme collective is to purify filmmaking by refusing expensive and spectacular special effects, postproduction modifications and other gimmicks. The emphasis on purity forces the filmmakers to focus on the actual story and on the actors' performances. The audience may also be more engaged as they do not have overproduction to alienate them from the narrative, themes, and mood.
That's a pretty good point I'd say.
I respect the hell out of the movement (though I haven't actually seen one yet... I own one but haven't watched it) but I definitely don't believe that every movie should be done like that.
It goes to show that you don't really need massive budgets to make a movie, which is good because lots of people don't.

I think it would take a pretty pretentious fuck to go in his backyard, film something, and say that he's a dogme filmmaker. But, at the same time, maybe that's the point, that it's universally available.

That makes a little more sense I guess...yeah, I agree...I wouldn't want every movie to be like that.

You can't handle a cheap looking movie?

And besides, you don't need typical Hollywood budgets to make a nice looking movie. You need talent. Watch El Mariachi. It was made for $7000.

Well if the camera was a little more still it would have been better, it wouldn't have cost any more or less toward the movie either.

I'm not sure of the ins and outs of costs, but, I like to think that that camera style was used more for the effect than the cost. I mean, you basically have to take Gravol before you watch the thing, which is part of the beauty of it. It's really easy to suspend your disbelief and feel like you're kinda there.

Yeah, you're right. They didn't do it in Cloverfield for the cost. In fact, it could have cost them more to do it that way...you never know.

I don't know. If you go to Ebert & Roeper and click on Cloverfield you can see a good review about it. The end of the review addresses the hand held camera issue pretty well.

And yeah, it definitely wasn't the cost. Just from seeing trailers I can tell that it looks really nice. There was 25 million pumped into it. That's more enough to make a good movie.

But just some food for thought... Transformers had a budget of 151 million. No Country for Old Men had a budget of 25 million as well. Transformers was entertaining and all but we could have had 5 more No Countrys for that much money. Disgusting.

I find it funny that I see criticism that you don't learn much about the monster because people want everything explained to them which is why we always have those quick cuts at the end of movies that explain everything.

Okay guys, let's pick this up again, it's a been a couple days.

What character(s) did you sympathize with? Did you sympathize with Rob, with both Rob and Beth, with Hud, with Marlene, or somebody else?
