Punk is, well to me anyway, black flag and stuff similar to that. Honestly I do not listen to it so that is why I don't have more knowledge on the genre.

And by pop I don't quite mean popular, I mean the genre.

Most of the stuff I listen to could best be described as alternative.

Pop punk is still punk. But that's not where my problem is with what you said.
No genre is dead. I could list tons of punk bands that are still doing it if you'd like.

to me punk is a garage band... a teenage / college garage/basement band... somoene only famous in the area you live in... once they go big time i'd consider it more rock or a type of rock...

with that being said, even if i named the band's you wouldn't know who they were lol... so thats kinda pointless..

a good example though is 10 years, they are from right here in knoxville, and when they were doing party shows and basement / garage concerts or even at local bars and clubs i considered them to be a punk band... but you'll find them under rock or metal in a music store.

I don't understand that logic. I don't see how your genre automatically changes once you hit the big time.

I know some would argue that once you get huge because you're on a major label you stop qualifying as punk - spirit/moral/philosophy wise, not genre wise - but that doesn't necessarily fly with me anyways.

But yeah, I just don't understand the logic you used.

You are right Obdurate no genre can really be considered dead. What I meant by dead was no "new" bands are punk, sure some old punk bands are still going at it.

And pop punk should never be considered punk, in my opinion. It should not even have the surname punk. Not that I don't like some pop-punk it just isn't what it seems like it is supposed to mean.

Punk music is often considered to have lyrics that associate with the government, politics, etc. But pop-punk is usually about personal life, girls, and etc. That is the difference to me at least.

^ Gotcha, in fact I think a couple posts I've made have addressed that.

And Mka, if you can't find new punk bands then you can't be looking real hard. It may have gone more underground but it is still definitely alive.
