Welcome to MerlinSoftware.com
go there download a program called ebook to images
and yes your right they are basically a series of images and you flip through them but it makes the images very readable....
you can set it on microsoft zune and it supposed to be the right setting for the zune but u'll notice when you upload them that they are not facing the right way... so put it on custom and run it 320x240 90 degree flip and it should be facing the right direction if not let me know and i'll run mine and tell you what to do.. its been awhile sense i converted one to images like i said have 5 gigs worth of ebook and haven't read them all so its been awhile since i converted them to jpgs.

p.s. comic books are done sorta the same way, but you take the image most of the time they are in a .cbr format which is a archive that comic book reader reads... so change the file extension to .zip or .rar and use winrar to unzip them they will be alot of images in either jpeg or png if they are in jpeg just highlight all the image and rotate them 90 degrees clockwise (might be counter clockwise) and then upload to the zune and they should be facing the right direction if you tilt the zune to the left then juze click and zoom in on the image to read the comic books... now if they are in .png format u'll have to convert the to .jpg and then rotate them and upload.
