Default Heavy Metal

Well, I just got out of my hip-hop phase (its all I've been listening to for quite some time).

I used to hate metal because of the stereotypical yelling and screaming that, at the time, is what I thought heavy metal was about. I've realized, after listening to several songs, that its all about the instrumentals. Anyone else listen to metal? Give me some songs to listen to.

Hoooo. Dragula. Old, but still a good song. I personally don't listen to heavy metal. The thing closest to it was Disturbed. I don't know if you would consider that heavy.

Three Day's Grace... don't know if thats considered metal.

I have no idea if this is metal, but its rock with great instrumentals and vocals. The song is Paralyzer by Finger Eleven. I only heard it recently, but its good.

Korn was always a big hit with me. Other than that, there's old-school metal like Megadeth (although that might not count, I dunno). I've been listening to a little Anthrax, Butthole Surfers, lost of Bush, Disturbed as was mentioned, Drowning Pool, a little Lamb of God, M.S.I.. of course Slipknot (the debate rages as to what exactly they are, which makes them so great).

And then, of course, the metalist of the metalers. James Blunt.

Oop. Forgot about Korn. Coming Undone is a good song. IMO, at least. It part of their "new" style as some people put it.

LOL, James Blunt. He is SO a hardcore metal rocker.

Don't worry. You're beautiful. It's true.

Screw nu metal, real metal, hard rock, heavy metal. As far as I'm concerned, if it is heavy it is metal. Disturbed, Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Godsmack, all that good stuff. And I agree that the stereotypical screaming is a little overdone, since even bands Disturbed in which there is plenty screaming it is mostly singing. And the instruments are an important part, though I wouldn't say instrumental songs are better than the ones that include vocals.

I would consider them nu-metal, yes. The only song of theirs that I really like is Madhouse.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll look into those bands. I've listened to Disturbed and Rage Against the Machine. Tool and Godsmack, not so much.

Okay, I couldn't resist anymore. I saw this thread and I fought it for a while but I have to post...

Eh, I don't like the usage of genres as anything more than a simple way to discuss things but calling anything that's heavy metal is a bit much. But whatever, it doesn't matter. Fuck genres.

Anyways, you gotta listen to every Slipknot album ever made and ignore all the metal elitists who view them as a stupid nu-metal band because Slipknot makes better, more emotional music, doesn't rely on technical wankery and is/was (moreso was) angrier than a lot of bands that pretend to be. They were also more dangerous than a lot of bands back in the day too (check out live shows from '99, when they first bursted onto the scene). They kept music a threat. They brought blast beats to the masses. Hell, one example: there was an arena that had seats (duh) and Slipknot told all the fans to rip up the seats. They were never allowed to play there again.
Also: Slipknot's influence ranges all over the world but metal elitists don't want to admit this. You can find lots of maggots in places that you don't even know exist. I would know, I posted on one of the biggest Slipknot boards for a few years.
I just love Slipknot. They have 3 albums with Corey as their singer and they're all masterpieces. They have one before Corey which is slightly experimental (has some funk parts and such) but all in all it's not as good as their Self Titled (which is a "nu-metal" masterpiece, sounds like World War 3), Iowa (a really heavy album) and Volume 3 (an experimental metal album).

I'm not a metalhead really, but I do like some. I'll list an album or two to start off on and then make sure to listen to the other stuff too if you like it:
Blood Mountain by Mastodon
Really technical sludge/heavy/doom metal album but with some experimental parts on it (like a talk box) but emotional.

Bath by maudlin of the Well
Experimental prog-metal. There's a lot of quiet parts mixed in with the metal and usage of different instruments like organs and such. Lots of clean singing too, along with death metal growls and screams. One of my favourite albums ever.

Fuck, my mind has gone blank. Well, try out some Metallica and Black Sabbath (I'm not a fan but they started a lot). I'll chime in with more suggestions.

Megadeth is metal. They helped pave the way for thrash metal.
Oh, and stereotypical screaming isn't bad. You just need to find a good screamer. I love screaming vocals.
