Hmmm...Fallout Boy really isn't that bad, but I do agree that it is like a fad band, that they play and will be popular for a while, then the world will move on and they will have nothing. It's not really my style of rock, you know? I prefer some of the harder rock like Disturbed, Tool, Staind, Godsmack, etc. Not hardcore screaming rock, but heavy.

A lot of bands will have nothing once people move on. The only band in your list that might have some sort of legacy is Tool. But that's not a diss, because a lot of my bands will only be remembered by the fans, not by the world at large.
But calling Fall Out Boy a fad band is a little harsh. They've been popular for a few years and are still going strong. They won't be legends but they're an entertaining band that speaks to a lot of people. They're also pretty much the best at what they do. More clever and melodic than their peers.

Perhaps they aren't a fad band, but how do you define a fad band? I would define one as a band that becomes The Band pretty quickly because they speak to a lot of people, but may just as quickly lose their way and become unpopular as the world moves on.

But I don't expect too many of the bands I like to leave a legacy. Tool might, because of their sort of unique style with Undertow and later with songs like Lateralus and 10,000 Days. But I don't consider my list of bands too popular anyway, I mean with the young population of today. But I think that fans of these bands will remember them longer than [the majority of] fans of Fallout Boy.

But they've been sluggin' on for years, in the mainstream, and even longer as a band in general so they aren't a fad band. They have a really dedicated fanbase (my girlfriend being a member), and will continue to have one for a while, and that's all any band can ask for.

It's no different than with Fall Out Boy, really.

Not to sound condescending or anything but your bands are very popular amongst the "nu-metal crowd." It seems to go that younger people find these nu-metal bands (I'm only using the term for simplicity) and listen to them for a while and "move on" to "real metal." It's a really stupid idea that the metal you listen to now is any less valid than bands like Nile, Mayhem, or any other "real metal" band that other people like.
Hey, Staind got me out of being a mindless shitty rap fan... then eventually I found Slipknot who is still my favourite band years after, even though they are largely considered a nu-metal band.

Edit: I'm not saying that that is how your taste is gonna go but it's a pretty popular direction from where you are. I didn't really go that way.

Yeah, I've never heard of any of those "real metal" bands. But every genre of music can be broken up into different sections anyway. For instance, rock. If you just say rock, that could be any band from Led Zeppelin to Slipknot. So we have classic rock, heavy metal, alternative, metal, hardcore, etc. I don't see how "nu metal" (I'll just Wikipedia that now) is any less real than any other type of metal. And I can see myself broadening my taste for music, but not moving on.

Edit: Wow, all Wikipedia pages on music genres and bands that I have ever read make music sound like a f***ing war. "The death of Kurt Cobain led to the downfall of alternative rock, allowing nu metal to gain ground." "Tool was part of the nu metal movement (it's a movement now?)."
