Blue October Being a fan of music in Texas comes with a lot of choices. The local music scene is relatively diverse in any of the major cities in Texas. For this reason, it’s very hard for a band to develop a true core following, simply because there are so many choices for the average music fan. This is perhaps the single biggest thing that makes Blue October stand out among the crowd. As someone who has watched many area bands flounder for years without any major level of success, this band simply held something different. The band itself is made up of front man Justin Furstenfeld, lead guitarist C.B. Hudson, bassist Matt Novesky, drummer Jeremy Furstenfeld, and violinist Ryan Delahoussaye. That’s right, a violinist in an alternative rock band. While the sheer curiosity surrounding a violinist in this type of band may get some people to listen, it’s the entire package that breeds the loyal fan base that the band has found. Ryan is not simply a violinist for the sake of having a violinist. A classically trained violinist with amazing talent, the band blends the sounds of the violin in without missing a beat. Jeremy is the brother of lead singer Justin, but again, he isn’t in the band for this reason. Jeremy brings an amazing vocal compliment on a number of songs, as well as abilities on the drums that come quite naturally. Jeremy didn’t start really learning the drums until he was asked to play alongside his brother, but he hasn’t looked back since. What once was a raw yet talented drummer has quickly become another bright spot in this band. C.B. has put his own stamp on the band as well. For anyone willing to take a look at the progression of the band, it doesn’t appear to be a coincidence that the songs began to take on an edgier tone once C.B. joined the band. This is likely a combination of C.B.’s influence as well as the band simply having the ability to take that route with such a talented musician. Matt Novesky is the latest addition to the band after having left previously to pursue his own musical dreams in his own band, A+ Machines. Both because of his influence on the sound as well as his ability on the bass, the Blue October fans welcomed him back with open arms. Then comes the real gripping part of the songs Blue October puts out, lyrics that cut right down to the bone. Justin is responsible not only for the lyrics, but for the powerful performances that come from the band because of them. The songs are delivered with such fierce feeling that it’s nearly impossible to avoid flinching away from the pain in them. Anyone who has felt the pain of real life relates to the lyrics on a personal level. Once Justin has a hold of you with his lyrics, he won’t let go, and you won’t want him to. Give the band a chance and I guarantee I won’t be proven wrong. |
