You should read
_ Doris Kearns Goodwin's
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. A most excellent biography on Lincoln, the people around him, and the time period in general.
_ Walter Karp's
The Politics of War: The Story of Two Wars Which Altered Forever the Political Life of the American Republic (1890-1920). You'll never look at America's domestic affairs and the Spanish-American War and Great War the same way again.
_ Frank Herbert's
Dune. I've never read a more inspiring and intriguing sci-fi.
_ Felipe Fernandez-Armesto's
Pathfinders: A Global History of Exploration.
_ Anthony Everitt's
Augustus: The Life of Rome's First Emperor.
_ James Bradley and Ron Powers'
Flags of Our Fathers. Bare with the book in its first one or two chapters. When it starts getting into detail about the whole Iwo Jima affair, the book dispels any notion that it wasn't worth every penny.
_ Bart D. Ehrman's
Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why. The introduction alone would make it worth reading, though if you're a more devout Christian, you probably won't like it.
