I want to play online with a friend but he doesn't have an xbox, so I want to play splitscreen with him. Can we use the same box?
I've looked around and some people have said the second player can play as a "guest" while some people said the second player needs to buy an account. But I don't want to have to pay for two accounts.

So I don't have xbox live gold, and I only want it to play online with a friend so I wanna know for sure.

Well to tell you the truth I think it depends on the game. Like on Halo 2 you can only play unranked and custom games with guest. I think that it could work but not 100% sure. I'll just come out and say that I don't own a 360 first of all I am more of a PC gamer but i have played with friends. On Halo 2 i'm absolutely positive it works. Hope this helped at all...

Gears of War you can play online, split screen. But both accounts have to gold membership.

I hate that both accounts thing.
I mostly just want to play Perfect Dark Zero online again, cuz when I had the trial membership, that was a good time.
