Default (Wo)man and nature - a hummingbird moth

People tell me this is the best photo I've made. If it was football, this would be a Hail Mary pass; I had no idea. We saw a few dozen of these little guys pollinating the dandelions, so I got on my knee, as close as they'd let me, and started shooting. Wasn't having much luck. Then the girl sounded really excited, behind me, so I turned around, saw this, and managed to get two shots before the moth flew away. Ironically I'd been having such a bad time with AF that I focused these by hand, before I could even think what I was doing. Probably this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

These moths live in the desert; I've seen them in Uinta National Forest and Zion Canyon, both in Utah.

That's absolutely amazing! Very nice picture. Must have been a very fast shot too. [High frame speed?]

Zion Cnayon is probably one of the most magical places I've encountered so far. You feel as if your not on Earth anymore. Angels Landing is WONDERFUL!

Angel's Landing is incredible, and so worth the hike. Camping in Zion, or really most of Utah, it's amazing how many more stars there are than in places like Seattle, Frisco, Denver, or most of the north East Coast.

This one was from a D60, which is a pretty ancient 6 megapixel SLR, and a 300 mm prime lens.

Do you have any pictures of the Grand Canyon, Forrest?

I've never been to the Grand Canyon, actually. So far I've made it to about 25 different national parks, including one in Arizona, but not that one.

This one almost could be, although it's Zion:

At the bottom you can see the Virgin River, and switchbacks along the trail. This is probably about halfway to Angles' Landing.

Wow, from what position did you take this picture? Were you on a cliff, a helicopter, or what? What a view...
