Saw this for the first time a lil over a week ago. Have since seen it again (both times in theatre which is where you should experience it first if you can).
Where do I start? This movie engulfed me like No Country did and I'm not sure which one I like more but the last time I made a top 10 list I put No Country on it so another movie has to get bumped off to make room for this...
I've seen 2 other PT Anderson films (Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love) and this is by far the best so far.
The music is really powerful and loud in the mix. You're practically deaf within the first few minutes. I downloaded the soundtrack because it's just so unconventional but fitting. Even when they're just standing around talking you got some dynamic tense song playing and it really makes the entire thing that much better.
Daniel Plainview is well... deliciously evil. The acting is pitch perfect for him and even for Eli.
In case you people don't know, the movie is basically about an oil tycoon (read: dirty capitalist) and drilling for oil. I know that doesn't sound that exciting but it really is.
Camera work is top notch. There are a lot of things that bash you over the head but there are also some subtle touches like when Daniel is pitching his idea (along with his son H.W. in the background) to the people who own the land he wants to drill. I won't say why it's a nice touch cuz it might ruin something. You probably won't notice it the first time around though.
Cinematography is beautiful.
The movie works on a few levels. Daniel could be a personification of capitalism. There's a father/son dynamic. Obviously drilling for oil relates to current events. Religious "prophets." I'm sure there's more.
Just see this.
