The way I look at this kind of situation is that while, yes, Meet the Spartans has a right to exist (obviously there's an audience for it), it's often at the expense of other, more creative, better, more daring/challenging movies.

Epic Movie made 18 million opening weekend (or something around there), and a nice little dark comedy called Living In Oblivion, made by a guy named Tom DiCillo, gets rejected by all the producers that he pitched it to. The actors and the friends of Tom financed it all ($500,000), and $500,000 isn't a lot in Movie Land so they could have easily made a profit, thus allowing more films of its kind to breathe, but it really didn't and Tom is still practically poor. Recently he wrote a letter to Roger Ebert asking why this kind of stuff happens.

Meet the Spartans will make millions and millions.

And part of it has to do with the fact that a large portion of people only view movies as just entertainment. I have ended up justifying myself multiple times when I've said that movies are one of the most important things in the world to me.

I guarantee that this movie will make millions. Not saying that's a good thing. And I completely agree with Obby that it's probably at the expense of other movies. Like Mean Creek. Guaranteed that would have done a lot at the box office.

It's why sometimes I'll come off as a snob when discussing movies or whatever. When you see great movies that don't have room to breathe then it annoys you more when you see Generic Comedy #8493020 make millions, because they recycled the same shit as every other movie.

Which is why, months ago, Transformers winning MoTM annoyed me so much because the Movie Club isn't Digital Media. It's meant for people who enjoy movies as more than just entertainment.

And I just want to make it clear, I don't think I'm better than the people who watch Meet the Spartans, I'm just in another group. I do watch a lot of more mainstream movies and may watch it someday and Hollywood produces some really good shit but I just realize there's more to cinema than that. I like to mix it up. Like, one of my favourite directors is a Thai director.

Why can't you watch both? Meet the Spartans and other parody movies aren't supposed to induce critical thinking. They're just for laughs. And I saw it today, and thought it was pretty funny. A record short movie, too. About an hour and 20 minutes.

If you would have rest my posts you'd realize that I already said I watch mainstream movies too because good stuff comes from the mainstream as well. But I expect nothing good from Meet the Spartans... it looks dumb. So since I only have so much time on this earth, if I'm given a chance to watch 8 1/2 or Meet the Spartans, guess which one I'm gonna pick.

And I never said every movie has to cause critical thinking. I'm a big fan of movies like, say, Shoot 'Em Up. But since we're on the topic of parody or homage movies, there's better.

I did read the rest of your posts. It's just that when you said this:

It kinda sounds like you're saying you don't watch movies like that. Meet the Spartans isn't dumb, it's a parody. Sometimes I like a movie that's just for laughs, for a change of pace. And yes, there are better parody movies. The Scary Movie x series, for example, are all really good.

Everyone has their own taste of movies they like, but I guess I just like a little of all of them.

I like movies in all genres that I've seen but that doesn't mean every movie ever made is good. And again, in one of my earlier posts I said that I like parody movies.

There's better movies out there that are "just for laughs," so why would I watch something that doesn't even look funny? I mean, it doesn't even look like these people are trying. But they know there's a market for that. LET'S JUST USE ONE NOTE JOKES AND REFERENCE A BUNCH OF MOVIES and that'll be funny?
Honestly, one of these movies parodied Nacho Libre................
A good parody/homage movie is Hot Fuzz. Or, shit, Planet Terror.

I just treat movies as more than just entertainment. And I won't encourage stuff like that when other just for laugh movies are struggling to get made.

Edit: And before you say it, I realize that parody movies do reference other movies but they can actually claim their own identity at the same time, such as Hot Fuzz.
