Re: 2001: A Space Oddessy I'm not going to check out the site quite yet. I just wanna let you know that SOMEBODY will reply to your movie posts.
I've had this movie on my computer for a little while and seeing the thread gave me that final push to commit myself to it. I knew what I was getting into... it's hard to be into movies as much as I am and NOT hear about this movie.
This is a very visual movie. Visual in the sense that there's not much dialogue and it relies heavily on imagery. It also uses sound in a really interesting way (the music that plays and the silence in space).
I have to admit... the beginning of the movie scared me for some reason that I don't understand fully. Then when they were doing the space landing and the monolith appeared for the second time I was terrified. Just perfect pacing and story telling there.
The movie hits on so many levels but I'm not surprised because it's a Kubrick film. And he's known for his ridiculous craftsmanship that he puts into all his movies. That's why he's one of the best directors to ever live (out of 5 of his movies that I've seen I've loved 2 and liked one... then didn't really like the other two that much but would still recommend them).
Subjects I think it deals with...
Religion, birth and death, how small us humans really are in the vast Universe (the camera work is especially genius in this regard... letting the world breathe but at the same time making you feel claustrophobic... an interesting contrast), the Unknown and how we both fear it and embrace it, evolution, technology, aliens, AI... and probably some other things I forgot since there's so much going on.
To me a general theme (if I had to pick one) is fear. It's like a science fiction horror movie.
I'd strongly strongly recommend this movie but that's also while understanding that it's for a very specific audience. Your people who go see the newest generic horror movie or science fiction or action movie and SOLELY those movies probably won't appreciate this movie. I won't go any farther than that because I'll start debating with myself about those types of people vs "film buffs"
